If you’re like me, you want to keep your jewelry looking it’s sparkly best at all times! And why should you settle for anything less. Recently I learned of a Home Remedy for cleaning silver jewelry and I wanted to share it with you all! You don’t have to waste money on polishing products because you have these items in your home already. This technique works on all sterling, fine silver, delicate stones and pearls.
Cleaning Silver with Baking Soda and Tin Foil – Line a glass baking tray with tin foil and place your jewelry on top. Don’t overlap as you want to ensure each piece is touching the foil. Sprinkle baking soda atop so it covers the jewelry. You just want a dusted layer. Next, boil water either in the microwave or on the stovetop and pour this over the jewelry and baking soda. Let all soak for 10 minutes. You can literally watch the tarnish vanish before your eyes as your jewelry becomes brand new again! The process that is taking place is the tarnish is transferring to the foil, effortlessly. Now, remove your jewelry and run each item under WARM water and dry with a towel. Be sure not to use cold water when rinsing as this can shock your delicate stones and can potentially crack them. You may repeat for extremely tarnished items.
What causes tarnish: Humidity and chemicals in the air cause silver to tarnish. The most common tarnish causing elements are food (onions, eggs, mayonnaise, salad dressing, salty foods) salt, wool, felt, rubber bands, latex gloves, carpet padding, sulfur in the air, oily residue from our hands and fingers.
Preventing Tarnish and storing your silver– Unfortunately all silver, including sterling will tarnish in time once exposed to air. To help slow down this chemical process, keep your jewelry out of open air when not in use. Store them in Jewelry bags, Zip Lock bags or Jewelry Boxes.
